Before Nationalization
Hilton Lodges Project Along the Historic Route
BERTA
has also built the Four Hilton Lodges along the Historic Route
of the country, namely: Tana Hotel at Bahir Dar, Goha Hotel
at Gonder, Roha Hotel at Lalibela and Yeha Hotel at Aksum.
The project was financed by the International Development
Agency (IDA). The hotels were originally to be run by Hilton
International and were constructed to Hilton standard. But
later they were changed to be administered by Ghion Hotels
Administration. The total cost of the Four Hotels Project
was Birr 7 million. The supervising engineers were Warner
Burners, Toan Lund Associate Architects of New York. The project
was completed according to the desired design and schedule.
Other
Building Projects
In
the early years, BERTA Construction has carried out and completed
several building projects among which the following can be
mentioned: Modern Slaughter House at Debrezeit, Staff Apartment
and Office Building at the Agricultural College of Alemaya,
The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia at Gondar Branch, the Telephone
Exchange Building at Bahir Dar, Foundation Work for Electric
Power Substations at Assela, Adamitulu, Shashmene, Yirga Alem
and Dilla, Metta Abbo brewery extension building, State Farms
buildings at Arsi and Balle and Fourth Brewery Project at
Harar etc.
During the period of nationalization
During
the period of nationalization, BERTA was mainly engaged in
the building of houses and factories. Its former inclination
towards rural road construction and water works have been
more or less post aside all through. Among those buildings
and factories, the major works were: Assab Refinery Workers
Residence, Relief and Rehabilitation Stores at Assab and Nazareth,
National Transport Corporation Garage Complex 7 & 9, Edible
Oil Mills Factory at Bahir Dar and other office buildings
in Addis Ababa and Adaitu, all financed by the Ethiopian Government.
The
Spare Parts & Hand Tools Factory along with, the Water
Pump Factory both located at Akaki and the Caustic Soda Factory
at Ziway are the major factory buildings executed after 1982.
These factory projects were financed by Ethio-Italian, Korean
and USSR Governments respectively.
